There are different varieties of sweet potatoes grown in Japan. The Murasaki Imo (in Japanese murasaki means purple and imo potato) is a type of sweet potato famous in Okinawa because their flesh are deep purple. Sweet potatoes are enormously consumed in autumn and winter for their consistency, sugar and warmth they bring.

We found this ice cream in the kombini near our home, the Seven Eleven. It is sold in small individual cup for about 250 yen, which is the normal price for a small cup of Häagen Dazs. I found it strange an ice cream with sweet potato so I was not convinced by this purchase but Pierrick always wants to try new flavors of Häagen Dazs ice cream so good, we bought just one cup to see. I was a little afraid it could be too sweet because sweet potato is already sweet at the base and in an ice cream, it could only be outrageously sweet. But surprisingly, it is not so much. The purple sweet potato has a very intense color and the purple is very deep. But when opening the ice cup, we were astonished by the pale violet. We barely felt the taste of sweet potato indeed. It is a violet ice cream a little bit sweet with very thin layers of sweet potato concentrate. We see it from the thin layers within the ice cream. It was a bit disappointing in the end. We expected a little more comforting taste thinking of sweet potato.

I'm not sure that the ice cream with sweet potato is a good choice in terms of taste and the Häagen Dazs Murasaki Imo has even less convinced me. If you want you can always test it, it's just quite bland in taste. Maybe you will confirm... :)
