Naoshima 直 島 is an island located in the Inland Seto Sea, between the main island of Honshu and Shikoku island. It is accessible by train from Okayama through the port of Takamatsu in Uno. It then takes 20 minutes boat to get to one of the 2 ports of the island, Miyanoura (west of the island) and Honmura (east of the island).
CARTE PORTS DE NAOSHIMAThe peculiarity of this island is that all over the island, there are works of Art outdoor since the late 80s, they are visible and within reach when you walk on the island. This is the Benesse company that created the concept of museum island and had the exploitation of the art site on the island. Along the road from Miyanoura to Honmura, you will see outdoor Arts like the Red Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama, the Stern with Hole of Shinro Ohtake, or Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama in front of the Inland Seto Sea. Many works are freely available on the island but there are also several museums such as the Museum of Art Chichu (地 中 美術館) , Art House Project 家 プ ロ ジ ェ ク ト (note : available only to ghests of hotel Bennesse House), the museum Lee Ufan 李 禹 煥 美術館 (I do not recommend, it is expensive for not much to see), the Art museum Fukutake, the James Bond museum,...Please note, most of the museums on the island are expensive enough pay and so allow a little money on you if more of them interest you.
You can rent electric bikes (it's easier, there are a lot of hills to climb) just in front of the Miyanoura port for 1000 yen a day. It is an island that is interesting and it's quite rare to admire and touch the works of Contemporary Art without much restriction.
